sominga:

Codex Seraphinianus (1981) by Luigi Serafini is a fictional encyclopedia from an alien world, written entirely in an indecipherable language that linguists have yet to crack (although the numbering system seems to have been solved).  It is made up of 2 sections, the first detailing the natural world, while the second is more concerned with humans and their history, practices, achievements, etc.
The illustrations that accompany the strange texts are disturbing and bizarre, but also recognizable at the same time, for they are often parodies of things that exist in our world.

Sometimes you need the alien to yank away the veil of familiarity, so one can see clearly for the first time how strange, sometimes troubling, but generally extraordinary our ordinary world really is.
